Mountain Ranges & Groups

At a high level the Scottish mountains and hills might be divided into several main ranges or groupings of geological and geographic similarity. Depending where you look you’ll find slightly differing definitions and groups but the following four are a start: Northwest Highlands, Grampians, Southern Uplands, Scottish Islands.

These groupings are far too broad for the purposes of this site, so I am taking a much finer view of the term mountain ranges. Maybe they’re ranges, maybe they’re groupings, but the idea of geological and geographic similarity remains. Examples of mountain ranges in terms of this site are the Torridon mountains, Kintail & North Glen Shiel, Cuillin of Skye, Cairngorms, Mamores etc. Links to currently featured ranges are below. Alternatively you can find individual mountain pages here.

As you’ll appreciate there are many mountains and hills in Scotland arranged in many ranges or groupings. There are 282 Munros, 222 Corbetts and 231 Grahams defined, and numerous other subsidiary tops and hills that don’t meet the criteria for these classifications. As a result the mountain ranges and mountain pages that this page introduces will take quite some time to build up with quality original content. This is a long term project and passion. Please check back for more ranges and individual mountains as they’re added.
