Liathach From Beinn Eighe, Torridon

Photo of the mighty Torridon peak of Liathach seen to good effect from the western ridge of Spidean Coire nan Clach, Beinn Eighe

Liathach is probably the most iconic peak of Torridon and a contender as one of the UK’s finest mountains. Seen here from the western ridge of Spidean Coire nan Clach, Beinn Eighe, the mountain rises in tier after tier of Torridonian sandstone before being capped by pale Cambrian quartzite. The east end of Liathach can be accessed from the car park on the A896 near the Ling Hut at the head of Glen Torridon. The slabs on the lower left can be followed easily to the steepening and scree where traces of path lead upwards, and then right, on to the east ridge of Stuc a’ Choire Dhuibh Bhig. Easy scrambling leads through a tier of sandstone to bouldery quartzite above. Beyond the ridge undulates and winds high above the valley without significant difficulty towards Spidean a’ Choire Leith, Liathach’s highest summit. Mullach an Rathain, the mountains second Munro, is visible beyond the hidden Am Fasarinen pinnacles.
