Glenfinnan & Loch Shiel, Moidart

Glenfinnan and Loch Shiel in autumn colours from the east side of the loch. There is a good track down the east side of Loch Shiel that leaves the A830 road a couple of kilometres east of Glenfinnan. On a fine October day we cycled down that way, past the Marine Harvest fishery at Guesachan, which is also the starting point for the excellent north ridge of the Corbett Sgurr Ghiubhsachain. This view was taken close to the north east end of Loch Shiel, looking back north to the Glenfinnan Monument and viaduct with beautiful autumn colours on the island of Eilean Ghleann Fhionainn and hill of Fraoch-bheinn behind. The last few years Glenfinnan has become a busy place with tourists flocking to view and photograph the stunning viaduct featured in the Harry Potter films. It’s easy to escape the crowds in the nearby hills though, and no doubt Glenfinnan experienced crowds in 1745 too with the beginning of the Jacobite rising under Bonnie Prince Charlie.
