Klibreck Shower And Shin

Photo of a panoramic autumnal view across Sutherland from Meallan a' Chuail above Loch Merkland to Ben Klibreck, behind the shower, and Loch Shin to the right

A panoramic autumnal view across Sutherland in a south easterly direction from Meallan a’ Chuail above Loch Merkland. A localised shower and rainbow are close to Ben Klibreck in the north while the length of Loch Shin is laid out down towards Lairg in the south east. This is wild, remote country bisected by the A838 Laxford to Lairg road from which access to Meallan a’ Chuail, a pleasant 750 m summit, can be gained. Meallan a’ Chuail is just short of Corbett status (2500 feet) but is well worth combining with an ascent of Beinn Leoid (792 m) 2.5km to the west which is a Corbett. Both hills can be accessed most easily via a stalkers path that leaves the A838 west of the head of the pass between Loch More and Loch Merkland. These hills are good view points to look into the remote area of eastern Assynt, from the head of Loch Glencoul to Beinn Uidhe and Ben More Assynt, and the watery head of Glen Cassley.
