Invermoriston Falls, Bridges & Autumn Colours

I’ve been driving through the village of Invermoriston on the west shore of Loch Ness for years but finally stopped and had a wander in early autumn during a long journey. I’m pleased I did. I was impressed with the views of the Invermoriston Falls and surrounding woodland and decided to go back a few weeks later, when time allowed, and the colours had matured. A path leads from the car park, on the north side of the bridge, along the banks of the River Moriston through the woods. In October the mix of deciduous and conifer trees presented a beautiful mix of autumnal colours. Invermoriston would be a lovely place to stay whilst exploring the Loch Ness area. You can book accommodation here.

A short distance along the path there is a “summer house” on the cliff edge above the river (take care along the unguarded river banks/cliff!). This is a great spot for photos upstream back to the stone built Invermoriston Bridge and there is also the old bridge behind that was designed by the famous engineer and architect Thomas Telford (built in 1813). There is a wealth of information on the history of Invermoriston at glenmoriston.org.uk.

Back near the road I stumbled across a leafy pool with fallen leaves all around and lovely deep reflections of the surrounding trees. I’ve started to find something quite mesmerising and enticing about the depth of such reflections; something that I wouldn’t have appreciated in my younger years; perhaps there’s a mellowing with age going on?

The views from the Invermoriston Bridge, the current road bridge, are lovely both downstream and up and it seemed only right to capture the autumn colours and falls in an exposure of several seconds.

I thoroughly recommend a stop and explore if you’re in the area. Invermoriston is just a few miles south of Drumnadrochit and Castle Urqurhart and a similar distance north of Fort Augustus at the southern tip of Loch Ness.
